This Maple was found growing near DU in the "devil's strip" between the sidewalk and the curb. The root flair is eight feet wide!
Ohio Buckeye is botanically known as Aesculus glabra. It is a medium size tree that grows to 40 foot tall with a 20 foot spread. It makes an ideal tree for smaller areas. Occasionally, they can have very striking fall colored foliage like the pictured tree.

Magnolia's are a rare treat in Colorado. Most walk the line on hardiness here in the Denver Metro area, but there are always exceptions. A protected location away from the south winter sun aids in their survival.
This beautiful red tree is called a Japanese Maple. Its botanically known as Acer palmatum var. atropurpurem 'Bloodgood'. This rare tree is somewhat tender when grown in our area. They usually do best when planted in protected locations... but there are always exceptions. The tree grows to 15 to 20 foot in height and width. This specimen is on the south side of the house with minimal protection from the sun.
This is a Kentucky Coffee Tree. It is botanically known as Gymnocladus dioicus. This wonderful deciduous tree grows from 50' to 70' in height and can spread 40' to 50' in width.
Miss Kim Lilac is a dwarf lilac that grows to about 4' to 5' in height and 6' wide. The flowers are not as showy as the Common lilac... but it fits well in tighter locations.
Sugar Maple, Acer saccharinum, is a maple that is rarely used in Denver, but should be used more. It's fall color is spectacular.
A glorious tree when it blooms in the springtime.
Pigeon tremex is a wood borer. The adult resembles the biggest wasp you have ever seen! Over 2" in length. They deposit a single egg in dying and damaged wood, such as this lightning strike on a Cottonwood tree.
